media advisories/press releases:

The Equality Ohio Campaign Fund was established in May of 2006 with the sole purpose of electing fair-minded candidates to office in Ohio. With supportive office holders, we will usher in a new era of equality in the laws and policies of the Buckeye State.

EOCF is the first statewide political action committee (PAC) in Ohio established to elect candidates who will support the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their families. To help create a more just and fair Ohio, EOCF will:

  • elect candidates to office who champion (not just “support”) equal rights;
  • put an Executive Branch in place that truly represents the interests of all constituents;
  • change the tone in the Ohio Statehouse by electing fair-minded people to the legislature;
  • hold accountable any candidate for public office that uses LGBT people, families, or issues as part of a divisive campaign strategy.

Endorsement Criteria

EOCF will seek to make financial and in-kind contributions, within the law, to a select pool of candidates in each election cycle. Staff to EOCF will make a recommendation to the Board of Directors and the board will vote both to affirm the endorsement and on the level of support. The Board may direct a total level of support with the staff determining the best use of resources to meet that level.

NOTE: EOCF is a state PAC. Under campaign law, EOCF cannot make endorsements in the races for United States Senate or United States Congress.

The following criteria will be considered in the endorsement process. None of these items should be considered a stand-alone requirement, nor are any a “litmus” test for any candidate.

  • Received the endorsement of Equality Ohio;
  • Reaches a threshold of viability that exceeds that of Equality Ohio;
  • Has a real need for financial support and a demonstrated financial plan to raise the remainder of the needed funds;
  • District is involved in overlapping races that are also a priority;
  • Candidates’ endorsement by other organizations in coalition;
  • Has been included in the “Emerging Office Holder” program;
  • The office the candidate is seeking has an impact on the GLBT community, or issues important to the community;
  • Election of the candidate to present office would increase viability in future races;
  • Candidate is the incumbent in a given race;
  • Candidate willingness to seek and promote the endorsement.

Equality Ohio Campaign Fund will only endorse one candidate in races where there is only one winner. In races where there are multiple winners, EOCF will rank the candidates in order of preference.
